Amid fears of the impending La Nina weather phenomenon which comes with the possibility of flooding, the Department of Disaster and Management Affairs (Dodma) says the Disaster Risk Management support programme which includes construction of evacuation centres, known as safe havens, will be completed before the wind strikes.<\/p>\n
Dodma says the evacuation centres will ensure that displaced persons should not occupy school blocks when floods occur, which affects school programmes.<\/p>\n
Dodma Communications Officer, Jeremiah Mphande, said in an interview that the project has completed one infrastructure out of the four to be implemented in districts that are prone to floods.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have completed Kandulu Safe Haven in Salima, which was a pilot project. We are also constructing dykes which control flow,\u201d he said<\/p>\n
Mphande said the project is being implemented through Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) which are involved in community-based disaster risk reduction.<\/p>\n
He said the CBOs have been given three months to complete their projects which are funded by the government of China and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) .<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is the third cycle of the project. For the current activities, funding will be disbursed this week and implementation will start next week. We hope that by November, all projects will be completed\u201d he said<\/p>\n
