We are here to talk about sustainability and how we can improve our practice as teachers and how we can advocate girls’ education in Malawi,” Hum- Antonopoulos said.

She added that for the past three years that Tfac has been working on the project, there has been great impact.

“In some communities, we are seeing mother groups that are really valuing the young girls’ education and raising funds for the girls. We have seen individual girls who have reached Standard Eight, passing their exams and getting scholarships and these are girls that would have dropped out of school along the way,” Hum- Antonopoulos added.

She also said the project has registered a 92 percent re-enrolment rate for girls who dropped out of school because of different reasons.

One of the participants, Flonny Mituka, said girls are meeting a lot of challenges which have an impact on their education.

“This training will further equip us with the skills of further intervening in the challenges. Most of the girls are dropping out of school because they are orphans or their parents are poor. We shall continue to speak to them on the values of education,” she said.

Fifty female teachers from different schools in the central region are undergoing a week-long training in Lilongwe on how they can assist girls to remain in school or re-enroll after dropping out.
