Domestic netball heavyweights, Kukoma Diamonds, are set to complete the signing of goalkeeper-cum-defender, Annabel Phiri, at a record fee of K600,000 from Northern Region league team, Lameck Queens.<\/p>\n
Phiri will smash the previous domestic netball record transfer fee of K350,000 which Diamonds paid when signing defender, Caroline Mtukule-Ngwira, from Tigresses in 2008.<\/p>\n
The reigning Airtel Money National Netball Trophy, Presidential Cup and GOtv Netball Champions League holders were on the market looking for a defensive back-up.<\/p>\n
Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) Vice- Treasurer, Jane Kachali, who facilitated the deal, confirmed the transfer.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe player has since travelled to Blantyre to link up with the new team before finalising the deal,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Diamonds General Secretary, Chimwemwe Bakali, said their sponsor, Capital Oil Refining Industries (Cori), has released funding for the player\u2019s transfer.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have been looking for a defensive cover and the technical panel felt that Annabel would be a perfect fit in our squad,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Bakali hailed the sponsor for providing funds to enable the signing of the defender.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt shows that Capital Oil Refining Industries is also committed to the development of the team. We will ensure that we should remain a winning team to keep on promoting the sponsors\u2019 brand,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
