Football Association of Malawi (Fam) says it has plans to run the Malawi Under-17 National Football Team like a club to ensure its progress.<\/p>\n
Fam General Secretary, Suzgo Nyirenda, spoke about the plans on Tuesday in Blantyre during a press briefing.<\/p>\n
He said the Under-17, which won the Cosafa Youth Championship bronze medal in Mauritius, would be participating in regional and continental competitions regularly.<\/p>\n
Nyirenda said they had learnt from what happened to the Under-17 class of 2009 that did not graduate into the Flames after qualifying for African Youth Championship and World Youth Cup finals.<\/p>\n
Nyirenda said the only way to keep the boys was to run the team like a club, adding that it will be named Fam U-17 Club.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs Fam, we still cry for the talent of the 2009 Under-17 squad which had the likes of Tony Chitsulo,\u201d Nyirenda explained.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn fact, we have the Cecafa tournament to be played in Sudan this October. We are trying our best for the team to participate in that tournament.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added that the association was talking to their counterparts in Egypt and Ghana for friendly games, including for Malawi Under-20 National Football Team.<\/p>\n
\u201cAll I can say is that we have more programmes to nurture this [Under-17] team and the best way is to run it as a club for easy operation,\u201d Nyirenda said.<\/p>\n
However, the Malawi National Youth Football Association President, Mavuto Missi, appealed to Fam to maintain the Under-17 team.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe boys are lacking a lot. Some of them face school fees problems and they are struggling to finish their secondary school studies. It would have been important to assist them,\u201d Missi noted.<\/p>\n
The Junior Flames arrived in the country on Tuesday afternoon from Mauritius where they finished on position three after beating Kenya 2-0 at the just-ended Cosafa Youth Championship.<\/p>\n
