Musicians Union of Malawi (Mum) President, Reverend Chimwemwe Mhango, is reported to have told an executive meeting recently that he is not comfortable working with the chapter\u2019s South Chairperson, Papa Mtume.<\/p>\n
Mhango, who has said he has no mandate to fire Mtume, has since indicated that he will raise the issue with the board of trustees to make a decision.<\/p>\n
Mhango confirmed of the meeting yesterday, saying \u201cit\u2019s me who said that I am not comfortable working with him because of other reasons which I will raise with the trustees.\u201d<\/p>\n
He maintained that it will be up to the trustees to make a decision.<\/p>\n
\u201cNot that the decisions are personal. I have no mandate to fire him but as a leader, I have a right to raise my concerns to the executive and the board of trustees if I see that what is happening will affect the development of the industry at large,\u201d Mhango said.<\/p>\n
The Mum president added:<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have rules and regulations that ought to be followed and if one is not willing to follow that, he or she can face the consequences. Central Chapter Chairperson Farai Chazima, was suspended pending hearing by the discipline committee.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut she displayed a very remorseful character that ended up in making the chapter to recommend for her reinstatement.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mtume said he was aware that the Mum leadership wants him suspended following the meeting which the chapter chairpersons did not attend.<\/p>\n
\u201cI cannot say much for now but I have heard about the issue through the social media. In fact, I have a post that the president sent so for now I am waiting for the letter or a summon but that will not move me from helping develop the music body,\u201d Mtume said.<\/p>\n
Asked what had gone wrong for him and his president to be in bad blood, Mtume reserved his comment.<\/p>\n
\u201cI can\u2019t say much for now as I said let\u2019s wait and see how things will transpire,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
A post allegedly from the Mum president sourced on the musicians\u2019 forum says:<\/p>\n
\u201cI have decided from today 1st August that I can no longer work with Mr Mtume until after all the issues have been resolved by relevant authorities. I will still connect with those willing to work under our leadership in the South through other legitimate elected leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n
The post further says that this serves as a notice for people not to be surprised \u201cif they see me sidelining him and some notable members of his parallel structure.\u201d<\/p>\n
The alleged post also quotes Mhango as saying:<\/p>\n
\u201cAlso note that this is from me as an individual because some of the issues are personal. He is free to work with the rest but where I will be working, he shall not be unless if I am absent.\u201d<\/p>\n
Several Mum members have commented on the post saying the issue needed to be sorted out amicably for the good of the union and that the disciplinary committee needed to be involved.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile said yesterday she was happy to have been reinstated into the position having been suspended last year.<\/p>\n
Soko was suspended after she was alleged to have been involved in being part of a parallel structure aimed at dislodging the current executive.<\/p>\n
