Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) has intensified its plans to source about K2.5 million to host this year\u2019s track and field national championship at Chirunga in Zomba on June 23.<\/p>\n
Track and field events mainly consist of throws, jumps and running.<\/p>\n
AAM president, Godfrey Phiri, said they had submitted proposals to some organisations in the country to bankroll the event.<\/p>\n
\u201cTrack and field is the hub of athletics everywhere and it is a must that we should hold it next month. We have been knocking on different doors as we seek to identify a sponsor,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Phiri said the track and field championship was important because it helps the association evaluate athletes\u2019 performances.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is at the national track and field event where records are broken and set. We must hold this championship to gauge the prowess of our athletes. If they break many records then we will know that we are heading in the right direction. If they fail, then we will meet regional coaches and other experts to discuss what we should do to improve the performance,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, one of the outstanding athletes at the local track and field would be selected to represent the country at the World Athletics Cup in China in August.<\/p>\n
Recently, AAM indicated that it had no funds to stage a local champion to select Malawi\u2019s representatives at this year\u2019s Olympic Day Marathon.<\/p>\n
AAM disclosed that it would select athletes based on their performance in previous international events.<\/p>\n
Malawi will host the event on July 11 after Malawi Olympic Committee (Moc) was offered sponsorship by Mitsubishi through Japanese Embassy to Malawi.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
