First Lady Gertrude Mutharika on Sunday afternoon unveiled the project of constructing roundabouts in Lilongwe with a call for support from different individuals and organisations towards beautifying the country.<\/p>\n
Mutharika, who is patron of Beautify Malawi (Beam) Trust, the organisation which has partnered other institutions including Lilongwe Water Board (LWB) and Lilongwe City Council (LCC) in the roundabouts project, also urged Malawians to conserve the environment.<\/p>\n
Currently, Beam is constructing two roundabouts in Lilongwe, one near Parliament Building and another near Capital Hotel and has plans to do the same in other cities.<\/p>\n
Mutharika said Malawi, being the Warm Heart of Africa, needs to be beautiful and clean.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are reconstructing our roundabouts to bring out the infrastructural beauty of our roads and cities. The beauty that will come out of these roundabouts will surely transform our cities and transform our country,\u201d Mutharika said.<\/p>\n
She also said the effects of climate change which the country is experiencing call for concerted efforts in taking care of the environment.<\/p>\n
\u201cClimate change is real and in this country we have seen the devastating effects. If we don\u2019t change our way of doing things, all these efforts to beautify our country will be in vain. Because of climate change, the watertable has gone down. As we water our flowers, let\u2019s use the water sparingly,\u201d Mutharika said.<\/p>\n
Mayor of Lilongwe, Willie Chapondera, appealed for support from different stakeholders, saying the council on its own cannot optimally take care of the city.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am referring to effective and proficient garbage collection, provision of good road networks, public transport and sound environmental management. Effective delivery of such services would obviously make the city of Lilongwe attractive and inviting to its own residents,\u201d Chapondera said.<\/p>\n
He further hailed Beam Trust for assisting LCC in partly fulfilling its mandate of providing different services.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
