Malawi\u2019s \u00a0representatives at this year\u2019s African Union Region Five Games in Maputo, Mozambique won seven medals on Friday.<\/p>\n
Held under the theme \u2018Celebrating Excellence, Inspiring Innovation\u201d, Malawi collected two gold, three silver and two bronze medals.<\/p>\n
Cecilia Luhanga was the overall winner in the women\u2019s 400 metres\u2019 category, while Prisca Kachule also got gold in 400 metres paralympic women\u2019s category.<\/p>\n
In the veterans\u2019 men\u2019s contest, Rodwell Kamwendo won silver just like Harry Sichali in the serious runners\u2019 category for men.<\/p>\n
Doris Fisher scooped a third silver medal for Malawi in the women\u2019s marathon, whereas Nancy Matanda won bronze in the same category.<\/p>\n
Alinafe Puwa earned bronze medal in 400 metres\u2019 category for paralympic athletes.<\/p>\n
Malawi National Council of Sports Executive Secretary, George Jana, described the athletes\u2019 performance as encouraging.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis shows that they are committed and dedicated towards doing well. They have shown their love for Malawi. Most of the athletes are quite young and I believe that we have a great future in the sport,\u201d Jana said.<\/p>\n
Athletics Association of Malawi President, Godfrey Phiri, was also happy with the results.<\/p>\n
Sichali and Fisher were also winners in their respective categories in local competitions\u2014 Ku Chawe Mountain Race and Mulanje Porters\u2019 Race last month.<\/p>\n
