Malawi\u2019s top welterweight boxer, Chimwemwe Chiotcha, defied odds to defeat International Boxing Federation Super Welterweight champion, Ntuntuko Memela, on unanimous points\u2019 decision in Limpopo, South Africa on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Chiotcha, returning into the ring after a year-long absence owing to his Malawi Defence Force assignment, was scheduled to face Philip Ndou, who is the only African boxer to have fought Floyd Mayweather.<\/p>\n
However, Ndou was withdrawn due to a reported unsporting behaviour and a failed medical during a weigh-in session after he allegedly manhandled officials.<\/p>\n
Ndou was replaced by Memela, who defeated him for the IBF Super Welterweight belt.<\/p>\n
According to No Pain No Gain Boxing Promotions Managing Director, Craig Rousseau, major stakeholders discussed before accepting Memela to challenge Chiotcha.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe didn\u2019t know much about this guy, save for that he had 16 fights, won 12 , eight by knockout, and that he had actually beaten Philip Ndou in February for the IBF Africa,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
According to Rousseau, Chiotcha swayed the first judge who scored 78-74 in favour of the Malawian. The second and third judges also gave it to Chiotcha 79-74 and 78-72.<\/p>\n
\u201cChiotcha is a warrior and he controlled most of the rounds. He was also the aggressor and landed some devastating punches. The opponent was very tough, but Chiotcha was stronger and better,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
One of the local judges, Desire Kambewa, said the result should raise questions on how other boxers fail to win away from home.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf Chiotcha has won in South Africa, that means every boxer who has prepared can win. It is time that promoters selected the right and experienced boxers for international fights. The credentials of some of the boxers that travel to foreign countries are questionable, no wonder we lose and blame officiating personnel,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
