Five people died on Wednesday while 24 sustained various degrees of injuries in two separate accidents that happened in Chiradzulu and Mangochi.<\/p>\n
In the first accident, four people died while 11 sustained serious injuries at Chisombezi Bridge along Mugabe Highway in Limbe.<\/p>\n
The accident occurred when a Nissan Caravan minibus, registration number MJ 7793, which had 15 passengers onboard and was coming from Mulanje to Limbe, overturned after the driver lost control.<\/p>\n
Four people died on the spot while the seriously injured 11 were referred to Mulanje, Nguludi and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital where they have been admitted.<\/p>\n
According to Limbe Police publicist, Widson Nhlane, only the identity of the driver, Madalitso Mwanika, aged 33 years, from Njema village Traditional Authority Mabuka in Mulanje, was confirmed by the time we went to press.<\/p>\n
\u201cMeanwhile, we are monitoring the condition of the driver as we wait for his full recovery. When he recovers he will answer charges of reckless driving which is contrary to Section 126 of the Road Traffic Act. Our message to motorists, especially minibus drivers who are most frequently on the road, is that they should always remember to regulate their speed because most cases of accidents on our roads occur due to overspeeding,\u201d stated Nhlane.<\/p>\n
In the other accident, one man has been confirmed dead, while 13 others have sustained injuries when a motor vehicle with a foreign registration number CA 776298, which was being driven by Yamikani Smart, aged 24 years, overturned once before plunging into a river.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe vehicle was coming from the direction of Mangochi heading towards Makanjira and it carried assorted goods and passengers. Upon arrival at Bwandabwa Bridge, the driver lost control of the vehicle and it started descending backwards as a result it overturned once and fell into a bridge,\u201d Mangochi Police publicist Roderick Maida said.<\/p>\n
Following the impact, Maida explained that one passenger sustained fractured neck and died on the spot. Seven passengers sustained fractures and are admitted at Mangochi District Hospital while six other passengers escaped with minor injuries and were treated as outpatients at the same hospital.<\/p>\n
