A swarm of locusts on Tuesday invaded the hunger stricken Nsanje district.<\/p>\n
According to Traditional Authority Malemia, the sudden invasion has threatened lives of people in the district as communities are already struggling to find food.<\/p>\n
T\/A Malemia said crops in the area of Tengani and other villages under his jurisdiction have been destroyed.<\/p>\n
This comes at a time when families in Nsanje are surviving on tubers called nyika that are found in water. According to communities in Nsanje whom The Daily Times <\/em>talked to this week, fetching Nyika has also become a dangerous activity as people are being attacked by crocodiles.<\/p>\n Malemia expressed worry that the invasion of locusts will just worsen the hunger situation in his district because crops that people replanted during this winter have all been destroyed rendering people hopeless.<\/p>\n \u201cWe are now in a fix. As you are already aware here in Nsanje, we are already experiencing difficult times. Recently, we have been depending on food aid and today, locusts has invaded our fields, this will cause more misery,\u201d Malemia said.<\/p>\n Malemia said he is liaising with agriculture experts in the district to sort out the problem.<\/p>\n \u201cCurrently we have joined hands with our colleagues at the District Agricultural Office and they have assured us that proper measures will be taken to get rid of the locusts because they have stormed very large numbers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" A swarm of locusts on Tuesday invaded the hunger stricken Nsanje district.
