Minister of Information, Patricia Kaliati, has attributed the prevailing trend of Gender Based Violence (GBV) in Communities to ignorance on the newly enacted Marriage, Divorce and Family Relations Act.<\/p>\n
Kaliati said at an orientation meeting in Ekwendeni over the weekend that the new guidelines are aimed at achieving gender parity as well as protection of human rights for all groups of people.<\/p>\n
She also condemned the violence that women suffer when marriage comes to an end.<\/p>\n
\u201cLet our local structures help our women and girls explore on their full potential because it is only an empowered lady who can escape all the violence directed her way just because she is a female,\u201d said Kaliati.<\/p>\n
She decried the prevailing low literacy levels among women saying uneducated ladies easily fall victim to various forms of abuse from their male counterparts.<\/p>\n
\u201cI know polygamy is common here and women neither have right to property acquisition nor ownership, thus subjecting them to poverty once they are divorced. The act is addressing all these issue,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
During the meeting, Kaliati also spared some minutes to clarify some of the issues surrounding the newly passed Land Bill which she said its advantages surpass the disadvantages.<\/p>\n
She further stressed that her ministry feels duty bound to educate Malawians on various issues of national interest.<\/p>\n
In her remarks, Member of Parliament for the area, Olipa Muyaba, implored chiefs in the area to lead by example by showing keen interest in understanding laws of the land.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
