Steve Chanje and Carol Banda won the Airtel golf championship in the men\u2019s and ladies\u2019 categories, respectively, at Nchalo Golf Club on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Banda beat two-time Airtel golf champion, Roza Mbilizi, to claim the top spot in the ladies\u2019 section.<\/p>\n
On the other hand Chanje, who last won the trophy in November, scored 35 points, beating Gabriel Kambale who also hit 35 points, but finished on second position after being counted out.<\/p>\n
Bregger Kaingwe got 34 points on third position.<\/p>\n
Chanje attributed his triumph to proper training.<\/p>\n
\u201cOut of my busy work schedule, I set aside two days for training in preparation for this tournament. My target was to get 26 points on the front, so that I can score over 40 points, but the hot weather affected me much,\u201d Chanje explained.<\/p>\n
\u201cFrom holes three to eight on the front, I did exceptionally well and also on the back, I played well in holes three, five and eight. In fact, I had 21 points collected on the front and 14 points on the back.\u201d<\/p>\n
In the ladies\u2019 category, Banda was declared champion with 37 points, whereas Mbilizi was her runner-up with 30 points, while Joline Bapu got 27 points to finish on third position.<\/p>\n
Banda, while thanking Airtel for the tournament, said she did not expect to win despite playing well.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe course is lovely as usual. In the morning, the greens were slow because it was wet, but in the afternoon it was fine. I enjoyed my game. June to December are my best months because I always win,\u201d Banda said.<\/p>\n
For being the champions, Chanje and Banda each received a Samsung galaxy S5 phone, golf bag, air time and a trophy.<\/p>\n
The two-day tournament started on Friday, attracting 72 golfers.<\/p>\n
Airtel Managing Director, Charles Kamoto, said their investment in golf is meant to help improve the sport.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is the second edition of the golf tournament after we held a successful maiden version at Blantyre Golf Club last month. We had six golf tournaments lined up this year, so we are done with two and the next is Mbawa Country Club [to be held] at the end of August and we will host the remaining three tournaments towards the end of this year. We know that most of the golfers are business captains and we believe if we play with them, it is the right forum to discuss business,\u201d Kamoto said.<\/p>\n
