I think artists need to respect their audience and not take it for granted,” said Bright Salama, who revealed that he does not miss Black Missionaries performances.

Black Missionaries’ bass guitarist Peter Amidu apologised before they started their performance saying they had a problem which was beyond their control.

Lead vocalist Anjiru Fumulani also apologised.

“It was a good show, Balaka fans missed us and gave us the much needed support and they were happy with the performance we offered. Of course we came late but we compensated,” he said.

Having delayed, the group compensated when they performed for close to three hours dishing out several renditions from their Kuimba albums before they bowed out in the early hours of Saturday.

“It was only proper that having delayed we should compensate the fans and so we are happy that they were satisfied with our performance and we just want to call upon people to continue supporting us because we have always said that we are where we are because of the people,” said the vocalist.

Despite pulling an impressive audience, some people entered the venue for free as there were no enough personnel manning the gates. Others also complained of the K2,000 fee saying the group came late.

Once again musician Anthony ‘Mr Cool Makondetsa, who was billed to perform was not present forcing some people to question the reggae group as to why they put him on the poster.

Mr Cool has missed lots of shows because he was sick but now he is fine but not ready for shows.

Three weeks ago Blacks performed with Makondetsa at Motel Paradise in Blantyre but he only performed a few songs.

Some quarters have expressed concern on why the group continues to put Makondetsa on posters and yet he misses out.

But Anjiru said they cannot remove him during their performances because he is part of them.

“As I said we cannot force him to perform at the moment because it all depends on how he feels. There are times where he has performed, for instance at Motel Paradise he performed and then the other week he did not and today he also did not but he may be available next week. For now he still needs time to be fit as the doctors advised him,” said Anjiru.

He said there are times where Makondetsa has told them that he would be available during shows but only to fail.

“So as I said we can decide not to put him on the posters only to be available. So it’s better to leave it because he is part of it. The only thing I would tell people is that Mr Cool is better and they need to give him time so that he gets better,” said Anjiru.

Khozie Masimbe was the first to open the floor before Yanjanani Chumbu took over and then Black Missionaries closed the chapter.

Drummer Amos Mlolowa, who has been performing with the group also missed out with Mada, who also plays with Edgar ndi Davis Band standing in.

“Amos was in USA for performances with Giddes Chalamanda and Edgar ndi Davis so in his absence Mada came in. He is back but he needed to rest hence still working with Mada, who is also a good drummer but we should have him back,” said Anjiru.

Fans in Balaka had to endure a long wait before they watched a performance of reggae group Black Missionaries at Zembani Lodge on Friday.
