{"id":28587,"date":"2016-07-22T12:15:03","date_gmt":"2016-07-22T10:15:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=28587"},"modified":"2016-07-22T12:32:29","modified_gmt":"2016-07-22T10:32:29","slug":"survey-finds-mineral-traces-in-thambani","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2016\/07\/22\/survey-finds-mineral-traces-in-thambani\/","title":{"rendered":"Survey finds mineral traces in Thambani"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An airborne survey which the government undertook with support from the World Bank has found significant potential\u00a0 for\u00a0 uranium,\u00a0 niobium,\u00a0 tantalum\u00a0 and\u00a0 other\u00a0 minerals\u00a0 in some parts of Thambani where Mkango resources is carrying out mineral exploration activities.<\/p>\n<p>The Survey also highlighted a number of magnetic anomalies not previously identified which require further\u00a0 investigation\u00a0 to\u00a0 determine\u00a0 the\u00a0 significance\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 magnetic\u00a0 anomalies, and whether they are related to mineralisation or geological features.<\/p>\n<p>According to a statement from Mkango Resources,\u00a0 the\u00a0 magnetic\u00a0 high\u00a0 anomalies\u00a0 provide\u00a0 an\u00a0 excellent\u00a0 focus\u00a0 for\u00a0 future\u00a0 exploration\u00a0 for\u00a0 niobium and tantalum at Thambani.<\/p>\n<p>According to the results, two thirds of the 137 square kilometre of the Thambani licence has a significant potential for uranium, niobium and tantalum.<\/p>\n<p>Mkango Resources Chief Executive Officer, William Dawes, said the areas require further investigation to determine their significance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very excited with the results of the airborne survey, which further confirms, significant potential for uranium, niobium, tantalum and other minerals in the Thambani licence.<\/p>\n<p>This area benefits from good infrastructure, including roads, power and a new railway line passing through the south of the licence area. To date, the market has yet to recognise Thambani\u2019s potential and we continue to look at opportunities to maximise value.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0 survey\u00a0 also confirmed \u00a0presence\u00a0 of\u00a0 a\u00a0 previously identified uranium radiometric anomaly measuring at least three kilometres, along\u00a0 the\u00a0 western\u00a0 flank\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 Thambani\u00a0 East\u00a0 ridge.<\/p>\n<p>The survey was part of a S$25 million World Bank funded nationwide airborne programme.<\/p>\n<p>Mkango\u2019s\u00a0 primary\u00a0 business\u00a0 is\u00a0 the\u00a0 exploration\u00a0 for\u00a0 rare\u00a0 earth\u00a0 elements\u00a0 and\u00a0 associated\u00a0 minerals.<\/p>\n<p>Mkango holds, through its wholly owned subsidiary Lancaster Exploration Limited, a 100 percent interest\u00a0 in\u00a0 two exclusive prospecting\u00a0 licences in\u00a0 southern Malawi, the Thambani licence and the\u00a0 Phalombe licence.<\/p>\n<p>The main exploration target in the Phalombe licence is the Songwe Hill rare earth deposit, which features\u00a0 carbonatite\u00a0 hosted\u00a0 rare earth mineralisation and was\u00a0 subject\u00a0 to\u00a0 previous exploration\u00a0 in\u00a0 the\u00a0 late\u00a0 1980s\u00a0 and for which Mkango completed an updated pre\u2013 feasibility study in November 2015.<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s strategy is to develop new sustainable sources of rare earth elements and other minerals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An airborne survey which the government undertook with support from the World Bank has found significant potential\u00a0 for\u00a0 uranium,\u00a0 niobium,\u00a0 tantalum\u00a0 and\u00a0 other\u00a0 minerals\u00a0 in some parts of Thambani where Mkango resources is carrying out mineral exploration activities.
