The people will not be paid on the official day they get paid and I am not sure the duration of the delay, but we are trying our best to solve the situation,” Msowoya said.

Commenting on the matter, some civil servants who chose to remain anonymous said it’s a sad development arguing that the cost of living is getting higher each passing day and such developments force them to live in debt.

“The main problem with this development is that our budget is disturbed. We have school fees to pay, utility bills need to be paid on time and, above all, we have to eat. In the end, we borrow money and it is not easy to plan on borrowed money. The government, which is our employer must, put its house in order and understand that its employees need to survive.

“However, we appreciate that they have come out in the open in advance so that we can plan on how to go about the financial challenges we are going to meet due to the delay,” he said.

Another civil servant said government should strive to have alternatives when technology fails them.

“We all know that technology is bound to fail us once in a while, but we seem to be ignorant about it and we do not have any contingent plan. It is not good because some of us solely depend on our salaries and the delays are always a huge inconvenience to us,” she said.

In May this year, civil servants salaries also delayed due payroll changes.

A statement which the Ministry of Finance issued in May, which was signed by Secretary to Treasury, Ronald Mangani, government was making “adjustments” to the pay roll in line with recommendations of “head count” in the civil service.

Civil servants will have to wait a little longer before receiving their July salaries due what the Ministry of Finance has described as loss of network between the Reserve Bank of Malawi and commercial banks.
