Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President, Lazarus Chakwera, has advised Malawians to avoid the mistake of electing to power leaders that fueled the brutal killings of innocent Malawians on July 20, 2011.<\/p>\n
Chakwera was speaking at Zolozolo Cemetery in Mzuzu, Wednesday, during this year\u2019s memorial service of 21 people gunned down during the protests.<\/p>\n
Chakwera, who is also leader of Opposition in Parliament, pledged to take action on the unfulfilled government promise to construct tombstones and compensate the deceased families.<\/p>\n
\u201cPromises should be fulfilled. Therefore, we are going to follow-up as Parliament on the matter. But this should be a lesson to Malawians that mistakes are not supposed to be repeated. Time has come for change,\u201d said Chakwera attracting applause from the gathering.<\/p>\n
Chakwera then criticised the current leadership for always turning a deaf ear to Malawians\u2019 call on the land bills and fees hike at the University of Malawi.<\/p>\n
He said government has failed to honour Malawi heroes like, Levi Ziliro Mumba, Chakufwa Chihana and others who fought for the country\u2019s freedom.<\/p>\n
Also present at the memorial service were Alliance for Democracy (Aford) officials.<\/p>\n
Democratic Progressive Party officials were conspicuously missing at the ceremony despite the presence of Minister of Information Communications Technology and Civic Education, Patricia Kaliati in the City.<\/p>\n
Former Peoples Party vice president responsible for the Northern Region, Harry Mkandawire, said Malawians should think of voting for a new leadership come 2019 elections.<\/p>\n
Speaking on behalf of civil society groups, Church and Society Programme of Livingstonia Synod of Church of Central African Presbyterian (CCAP) Executive Director, Moses Mkandawire, said government should not be reluctant to adopt a federal system arguing that unitary government has failed Malawians.<\/p>\n
He said Northerners are reluctant to forgive the current government because it has not come in the open admitting their wrong-doing over the July 2011, killings, failure to construct tombstones for those killed and the current selection of students to public schools of quota system.<\/p>\n
But Kaliati said her presence in the region was on ministerial assignment.<\/p>\n
