As South African\u2019s celebrated Mandela Day, which falls on 18 July every year, Standard Bank Malawi joined the cause by painting Bwaila Maternity Hospital in Lilongwe.<\/p>\n
The bank\u2019s Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Mashanda, said the bank considers the health sector as a priority area in its corporate social responsibility programmes.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe feel that we need to be in a position to contribute as a corporate player in Malawi. We have been donating to the health sector for a long time and we will continue to invest in the sector as it is critical to the country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
In her remarks, South Africa High Commissioner, Cassandra Mbuyane-Mokone, said doing charity work is the best way to honour the memory of Mandela.<\/p>\n
\u201cMandela Day is a day we celebrate by giving a bit of our time to charity work. The United Nations in 2010 declared 18 July, which is a birth date of the late Nelson Mandera, to be an international Mandela Day where everyone is supposed to do charity work in their community for 67 minutes,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
An official at Bwaila Hospital, Ethel Rambiki, thanked Standard Bank for the support.<\/p>\n
