World Food Programme (WFP) Executive Director, Ertharin Cousin, and Jill Biden, wife to the US vice-president, Joe Biden, are expected to arrive in the country today to assess impact of the prevailing food shortage.<\/p>\n
During the visit, Biden will focus on economic empowerment and education opportunities for women and girls and on partnerships on global health and food security, according to a statement from WFP.<\/p>\n
The two are scheduled to visit Zomba and Lilongwe and their stay ends on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile in Malawi, the WFP Executive Director will meet government officials and beneficiaries of WFP food assistance, including drought-affected people in Zomba and Lilongwe districts,\u201d reads the statement.<\/p>\n
Cousin is visiting Malawi when 6.5 million people-nearly 40 percent of Malawi\u2019s population-need emergency food assistance, according to the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee report for 2016\/17.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis situation will require the largest humanitarian response ever in the country\u2019s history,\u201d reads the WFP statement.<\/p>\n
Cousin will share with Malawians information about WFP activities towards breaking the cycle of food and nutrition security including drought relief, school feeding and support for smallholder farmers in Malawi.<\/p>\n
Last week, President Peter Mutharika launched the 2016\/2017 Food Insecurity Response Plan whose aim is to assist the 6.5 million vulnerable people.<\/p>\n
