Poor participation of communities in school infrastructure development activities has been cited as the main contributing factor to the high school dropout rates at Lumbazi LEA School in Lilongwe.<\/p>\n
Head teacher for the school, Margaret Chirwa, disclosed this recently in an interview during a media training workshop on quality education organised by GIZ in Lilongwe.<\/p>\n
According to Chirwa, the school has currently eight school blocks, five makeshift classrooms made from bamboos and six pit latrines against the total number of 2000 pupils.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is so pathetic indeed when it comes to winter, summer and rainy seasons. Many pupils do not endure such conditions, hence opting to drop out of school,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n
Chirwa said the school has been approaching well-wishers to assist with additional infrastructures such as school blocks and toilets but efforts have been at a snail\u2019s pace due to poor participation of communities to contribute towards the initiative.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe corporate world and other well-wishers show an interest to help us. However, they ask us to first contribute with bricks, quarry stone or sand so that they can help us with the remaining materials but the communities do not to cooperate,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n
Fedson Moyo, a parent to some pupils at the school and a member of the community, agreed with Chirwa.<\/p>\n
He said his children have been on and off school due to various poor health conditions which they suffer while learning under unfavourable environment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
