The country\u2019s cost of living for the month of June went down by 0.56 percent from K167,000 in May to K166,000 according to a survey released by the Centre For Social Concern (CfSC).<\/p>\n
CfSC has described the drop as insignificant for low income earners who are still facing many economic challenges.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe gap between the cost of living and what the low income earners get at the end of the month is too wide, more especially during the time of food shortage. Maize remains the major commodity which increases the cost of living in Malawi,\u201d reads the report in part.<\/p>\n
The report further indicates that four commodities such as maize, tomatoes, onions and sugar had distinct figures, which contributed to changes in the cost of living.<\/p>\n
On average, CfSC reports that prices for maize and sugar went up by 17 percent within a month while prices for tomato and onions dropped by 30 percent during the same period.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlthough maize, which is usually the main determinant increased with a national average of 23 percent among the cities, it failed to increase the cost of living due to a significant reduction price fall of seasonal agricultural produce such as tomato and onions of which, between May and June, the prices dropped by 28 percent and 32 percent, respectively,\u201d CfSC said in the report.<\/p>\n
The figures show that between May and June, the cost of living for Blantyre and Mangochi increased by 0.03 percent and 4.3 percent, respectively, while that for Lilongwe, Zomba, Mzuzu and Karonga dropped by two percent, 0.26 percent, 1.9 percent and four percent, respectively.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
