Old Mutual Malawi on Friday donated books to Naotcha Primary School in Blantyre as one way of encouraging the reading culture in the country.<\/p>\n
Through the United States Agency for International Development (Usaid)\u2014led Early Grade Reading Activity (Egra), Old Mutual has committed K8 million for the production of low-cost reading materials for 100 primary schools in Blantyre Rural, Lilongwe Rural East, Mzimba North, Thyolo and Zomba Rural.<\/p>\n
Old Mutual Malawi Acting Managing Director, Edith Jiya, said her firm believes that education is the key to the economic success of any nation.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is the reason why we decided to partner Usaid and the Ministry of Education in this initiative that encourages reading in early primary school classes,\u201d said Jiya.<\/p>\n
She observed that, apart from the distribution of books, Old Mutual is also involved in many other activities of improving education, including the Mathematics Olympiad.<\/p>\n
Egra is a US Government supported project which aims at supporting the Ministry of Education\u2019s efforts to improve reading abilities of Malawian learners from Standard One to Standard Three.<\/p>\n
Usaid Programme Management Specialist, Chikondi Maleta, said it is impressed with the response of the private sector under the Egra initiative.<\/p>\n
He added that beginning the next academic year, Usaid in conjunction with the British Government\u2019s Department for International Development (DfID) have committed $75 million towards upscaling the reading programme to all the primary schools in the country.<\/p>\n
Maleta said, the forthcoming initiative will also be expended to both reading both English and Chichewa and that it would cover students from Standard One to Standard Four.<\/p>\n
He urged head teachers in all schools in the country to make sure that the books are given to the students and not kept in storerooms.<\/p>\n
Blantyre Rural District Education Manager, Paul Chiphanda, hailed the partnership that exists among government, private sector and the donor community in supporting education in the country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
