{"id":27675,"date":"2016-07-08T12:17:08","date_gmt":"2016-07-08T10:17:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=27675"},"modified":"2016-07-08T12:17:08","modified_gmt":"2016-07-08T10:17:08","slug":"court-summons-mls-over-lawyers-conduct","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2016\/07\/08\/court-summons-mls-over-lawyers-conduct\/","title":{"rendered":"Court summons MLS over lawyer\u2019s conduct"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The High Court has summoned lawyer Christopher Chiphwanya and Malawi Law Society President John Suzi-Banda to show cause on why disciplinary action should not be taken against Chiphwanya in view of his conduct.<\/p>\n<p>According to the notice from the High Court\u2019s Principal Registry, it has been brought to the attention of the court that Chiphwanya closed his legal firm called Denning Chambers without making necessary arrangements for the affairs of the his clients, Jassan and others.<\/p>\n<p>The conduct is said to be a contravention of Section 21(1) (i) of the Legal Education and Legal Practitioners Act in that it tends to bring the profession of the law into disrepute.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr Christopher Chiphwanya and the President of the Malawi Law Society have up to 30th August 2016 to file affidavits and skeleton arguments on the notice. The same applies to filing preliminary applications. All papers shall be filed with the Judge\u2019s Clerk,\u201d reads the notice dated July 4 that Registrar of the High Court has signed.<\/p>\n<p>The notice further says the matter shall be heard in open court before Judge Michael Tembo in Blantyre on September 20 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The court\u2019s noticed the conduct in civil appeal number 7 of 2008 \u2013Jassan and others v Telekom Networks (MW) Limited.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The High Court has summoned lawyer Christopher Chiphwanya and Malawi Law Society President John Suzi-Banda to show cause on why disciplinary action should not be taken against Chiphwanya in view of his conduct.
