Project Concern International (PCI) has said strengthening community management of acute malnutrition referral and follow-up systems will help address underlying causes of food insecurity, particularly among most vulnerable households.<\/p>\n
Speaking at Balaka DHO on Tuesday when PCI donated part of 512 baby salter weighing scales for Balaka and Machinga districts, PCI nutrition adviser, Blessings Njolomole, said the weighing scales will assist in growth monitoring and promotion at community level.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe aim is to assist in early detection and tracking of growth faltering children so that we refer them into the continuum of care for treatment, thus combating malnutrition among under-five children as soon as it manifests,\u201d Njolomole said.<\/p>\n
He said those going off-track in their nutrition status will either be referred to the outpatient therapeutic feeding programme, supplementary feeding programme or the nutrition rehabilitation unit within the Usaid-funded food for peace programme.<\/p>\n
Balaka District Health Officer (DHO), Mtisunge Mkokachingwe, said the scales will ensure that they provide adequate and quality services to all the children and communities as they will be distributed in all under five catchment areas manned by community Health Surveillance Assistants (HSAs).<\/p>\n
\u201cThe situation on malnutrition status is on the rise due to the food shortage in the district, so it is imperative to monitor the children as hunger is very easily noticeable in the health of children who will then be put on nutrition supplements,\u201d Mkokachingwe said.<\/p>\n
She said due to the scarcity of resources, their needs are plenty and apart from the weighing scales, they would also welcome BP machines.<\/p>\n
The 512 scales worth K4,875,144 ($6,866.40) donated to Balaka and Machinga districts hospitals were bought through a five-year (2015-2019) holistic food security programme \u201cNjira Project\u2013Pathways to Sustainable Food Security\u201d being implemented by PCI in Machinga and Balaka.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
