The International Labour Organisation (ILO) says cooperatives are key to the achievement of the recently adopted United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals to which Malawi is party.<\/p>\n
The ILO says cooperatives, together with other micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, will continue to play a key role in providing decent jobs for all as they offer a low-barrier entry to the world of entrepreneurship, and play a key role in formalizing work in the informal economy.<\/p>\n
In a statement released to commemorate this year\u2019s International Day of Cooperatives, ILO Director General, Guy Ryder, said it is about time governments, the world over, started to realise the outstanding work cooperatives do and their major contribution to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.<\/p>\n
Ryder said ma n y cooperatives worldwide have shown their capacity to provide quality jobs and thus support sustainable development.<\/p>\n
\u201cCooperatives are not a new idea, but are more relevant than ever if we look at the development challenges and opportunities the world faces over the coming decades.<\/p>\n
\u201cToday, the world of work is at a crossroads, with the need to create over 600 million new jobs globally by 2030 to keep pace with the growth of the working population. Ryder said in the statement.<\/p>\n
Ryder said livelihoods of millions of people around the world depend on cooperatives.<\/p>\n
\u201cOver decades, cooperatives have offered a resilient, democratic, sustainable and economically viable model o f doing business in all sectors of the economy.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo highlight these achievements, and in collaboration with the International Co-operative Alliance (ICA), the ILO issued a study in 2014 showing examples of how cooperatives help achieve sustainable development. This research contributed to the discussion leading to the adoption of the Sustainable Development Agenda,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
For these and other reasons, the ILO says it recognises the role of cooperatives as drivers of sustainable development, and remains a strong supporter of the cooperative enterprise model.<\/p>\n
The Global Financial Integrity, a Washington DC-based research and advocacy group earlier listed Malawi among countries that would face challenges in implementing the sustainable development goals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
