One competition is played in Blantyre and another in Lilongwe. The trend has always been that the hosting team wins. CIM hosted EBR on the 2nd and 3rd July 2016. And guess what, EBR carried the day by one point, thereby breaking the jinx.

The game had to be pushed to the very last match-play. It has never gotten this close and, therefore, brought some excitement. In the past, the hosts have always dominated.

Now talking about the last game, Thando Sibindi of EBR and George Chirwa of CIM were playing the last hole. Sibindi was leading by a point. Sibindi was to tee-off first. He pulled his shot to the right. He is a weight lifter which makes him a very long hitter. He pulled his ball to the left and his ball ended up going out of bounds. Then came Chirwa’s time, he hit a low slice which ended up in the water hazard. As per golf rules, he was supposed to drop the ball at the point where it last crossed the margin, in line with the pin, as far back as he wished so long as the ball was within bounds. If he were to do that, his ball would have been behind two very big trees. Sadly, that was not the case. He dropped his ball on the far right avoiding the big trees. There was a breach of the golf rules.

A couple of EBR players who were watching wanted to correct the situation. That drove us – the CIM-into some serious argument with them. In stroke-play, there can be such intervention. In match-play, the two competitors make the decisions.

The rules say that a person is supposed to drop a ball any distance behind the water hazard, keeping a straight line between the hole and the point where the ball last crossed the margin of the water hazard under a penalty of one stroke.

According to the Decisions book rule 9/1 – Incorrect Information on Rules – A player incurs no penalty for giving incorrect information on the Rules (see Definition of “Rules”); this is not wrong information as that term is used in Rule 9. It is up to each player to know the Rules (Rule 6-1). However, if it is established that a player has knowingly given incorrect information on the Rules, the Committee would be justified in imposing a penalty of disqualification under Rule 33-7. Chirwa dropped a ball in the wrong place.

His opponent was okay with it, therefore, no one needed to intervene. EBR, some of us saw this coming. Well done. You humbled CIM.

There has been rivalry between two golfing groupings – the Exclusive Bragging Rights (EBR) of Lilongwe Golf Club and Chip Inn Masters (CIM) of Blantyre Sports Club.
