{"id":27346,"date":"2016-07-04T15:27:49","date_gmt":"2016-07-04T13:27:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=27346"},"modified":"2016-07-04T15:27:49","modified_gmt":"2016-07-04T13:27:49","slug":"man-arrested-for-possessing-ivory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2016\/07\/04\/man-arrested-for-possessing-ivory\/","title":{"rendered":"Man arrested for possessing ivory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At a time Malawi is stepping up efforts to end cases of wildlife crimes, 35-year-old Chimwemwe Msowoya has become the latest suspect to be arrested in connection with illegal possession of specimen of protected species, police say.<\/p>\n<p>National Deputy Police publicist, Thomeck Nyaude, said Msowoya was found with two pieces of ivory valued at K7 million.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOfficers at the national police headquarters and officials at the wildlife department managed to arrest him on July 2 at Mzito Village in Rumphi after they received a tip-off from reliable police sources in Rumphi and Mzimba Districts,\u201d said Nyaude.<\/p>\n<p>However, Nyaude said their recent investigations of wildlife crimes indicate that people who are arrested as culprits are only sent to poach in the game reserves but the main beneficiaries are not directly involved in the syndicate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd due to this discovery, both the police and the department of wildlife have teamed up to work hand in hand with the wildlife crime investigation unit to trace the main culprits because by doing so we will get to the bottom of this malpractice,\u201d said Nyaude.<\/p>\n<p>He also urged members of the general public to play their role of informing the police of people suspected of committing such crimes.<\/p>\n<p>Illegal possession of specimen of protected species is contrary to section 86 sub section 1 of the National Parks and Wildlife Act.<\/p>\n<p>Msowoya hails from Mzito Village in the area of Traditional Authority Chikulamayembe in Rumphi<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At a time Malawi is stepping up efforts to end cases of wildlife crimes, 35-year-old Chimwemwe Msowoya has become the latest suspect to be arrested in connection with illegal possession of specimen of protected species, police say.
