Calls to arm persons with albinism with guns have received a negative response from government which argues that the move can only be the last if other means that the country is employing to end the acts fail.<\/p>\n
Mzuzu University (Mzuni) students on Thursday last week held demonstrations against the abduction and killing of people with albinism saying the targeted people should be allowed to carry guns for self defence.<\/p>\n
Reacting to the calls government spokesperson, Patricia Kaliati, said the proposal is ill-timed.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe respect their [students] opinion but we are sorry because we cannot accept their proposal. Guns cannot be distributed anyhow because they are governed by a legal framework.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat would you expect if police, soldiers and all people with albinism have access to guns?\u201d wondered Kaliati saying government has devised other possible means to end the acts.<\/p>\n
In a separate interview, Church and Society of Livingstonia Synod of Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) Executive Director Moses Mkandawire described the proposal as childish.<\/p>\n
Mkandawire said allowing guns to be distributed to the people with albinism might result into more havoc in communities in the country.<\/p>\n
Mzuzu University Student Union President, Wazamazama Katatu, said government should cast its net wider for options.<\/p>\n
President of Association of People Living with Albinism, Boniface Masa, described the proposal as tricky.<\/p>\n
He said such a suggestion needs proper understanding.<\/p>\n
Masa was, however, quick to point out that government is doing little on the situation especially in rural areas.<\/p>\n
\u201cMuch as we appreciate a 24 hours maximum security to people with albinism as ordered by the President [Peter Mutharika] in Kasungu during World Albinism Day, the order faces implementations challenges.<\/p>\n
\u201cPolice have tried to deploy more officers in the affected districts but more needs to be done,\u201d said Masa.<\/p>\n
National Police spokesperson Nicholas Gondwa said the police have introduced more patrols in some districts in response to the President\u2019s order.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
