Government has distributed three out of the six Cashgate buses that were being kept at National Police Headquarters to three security agencies.<\/p>\n
The Daily Times <\/em>has confirmed that the Malawi Defence Force (MDF), the Malawi Police Service (MPS) and the Malawi Prison Service have been given a bus each. Three buses are still at National Police Headquarters.<\/p>\n This has happened a month after The High Court in Lilongwe released the buses, worth K520 million, suspected to have been bought using funds plundered in the infamous Cashgate.<\/p>\n Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Samuel Tembenu, confirmed on Monday that a number of government departments expressed interest to use the buses, but it was decided to give the three departments.<\/p>\n \u201cInitially the DPP [Director of Public Prosecutions] made an application to the court to have the buses disposed because they were deteriorating. They were just parked at the Police Headquarters and the court allowed us that\u2019s what we are currently doing,\u201d Tembenu said.<\/p>\n The minister said they are still considering other requests that were made for the remaining three buses.<\/p>\n \u201cThere was a high demand from so many departments but we have only six buses, and now we are done with three and with the three remaining, we are still looking into other requests,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n The six Scania Marcopolo buses have been kept at Malawi Police Headquarter at area 30 Lilongwe since 2013 and were used as evidence in court for Leonard Kalonga\u2019s Cashgate case.<\/p>\n The K520 million used to purchase the buses is included in the K3.7 billion that Kalonga admitted to have laundered.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Government has distributed three out of the six Cashgate buses that were being kept at National Police Headquarters to three security agencies.
