{"id":27074,"date":"2016-06-29T11:58:16","date_gmt":"2016-06-29T09:58:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=27074"},"modified":"2016-06-29T11:58:16","modified_gmt":"2016-06-29T09:58:16","slug":"us-assistant-secretary-visits-malawi-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2016\/06\/29\/us-assistant-secretary-visits-malawi-today\/","title":{"rendered":"US Assistant Secretary visits Malawi today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The United States Assistant Secretary for African Affairs, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, is expected to visit Malawi today in a four-nation African tour that started from June 23 and will end on July 1.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Commander for Civil-Military Engagement, United S tates Afr ica Command Ambassador Alexander Laskaris is expected to accompany Thomas-Greenfield in a journey that will see her to Uganda, Zambia and Botswana.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Malawi, she will meet with Malawi Defense Forces representatives to discuss military cooperation,\u201d the statement from the US Embassy in Malawi reads.<\/p>\n<p>In each of these countries, Thomas-Green field is meeting government officials and civil society representatives with a focus on the recognition and consolidation of democratic gains in the region.<\/p>\n<p>In Zambia, she will meet a group of Mandela Washington Fellows from President Barrack Obama\u2019s Young African Leaders Initiative and will visit US-trained Zambian peacekeeping troops who have served in the Central African Republic.<\/p>\n<p>In Botswana, she will launch a U.S. government innovation grant to a youth NGO focused on civic education<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The United States Assistant Secretary for African Affairs, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, is expected to visit Malawi today in a four-nation African tour that started from June 23 and will end on July 1.
