{"id":27049,"date":"2016-06-29T10:53:05","date_gmt":"2016-06-29T08:53:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=27049"},"modified":"2016-06-29T10:53:05","modified_gmt":"2016-06-29T08:53:05","slug":"mawu-agm-july-8","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2016\/06\/29\/mawu-agm-july-8\/","title":{"rendered":"Mawu AGM July 8"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Malawi Writers Union (Mawu) will hold its annual general meeting (AGM) on July 8 in Liwonde where top on the agenda will be the election of the new executive.<\/p>\n<p>According to sources, the positions up for grabs during the elections are that of president and vice, secretary, treasurer and publicity secretary. The new executive is expected to serve for four years.<\/p>\n<p>The AGM will also elect chairpersons for the Budding, Women and Religious Writers\u2019 Desks.<\/p>\n<p>The source, however, said the regional chairpersons which also constitute part of the executive will be thrown to respective regions to elect their leaders.<\/p>\n<p>The reigning president Sambalikagwa Mvona confirmed of the AGM yesterday further revealing that he will stand again.<\/p>\n<p>Mvona has received criticism from some quarters for clinging to power having served as president for longer periods and not giving a chance to young blood.<\/p>\n<p>But Mvona said he is contesting again because he has been asked to do so by many writers who are satisfied with the way he has driven the writer\u2019s body.<\/p>\n<p>Since 1995, Mawu has been led by four presidents \u2013 late Edison Mpina, Steve Sharra (on acting capacity), Stanley Onjezani Kenani and Mvona.<\/p>\n<p>Those interested to contest for the position of president need to be paid-up members for the past two years and that they should at least have published a book.<\/p>\n<p>The closing date for the application is July 4 and asked why little time has been given for the applications; Mvona said members have known about the AGM for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>All those seeking to contest for the other positions have since been asked to express their interest by entailing their qualifications both academic and artistic as a writer and sent it to Mawu2016elections@ gmail.com.<\/p>\n<p>Forme d in 19 95 , following the collapse of the one-party rule and at the request of the Southern Africa Development Community (Sadc) Council of Writers, Mawu graduated from being a basket organisation in 1999 when it opened its secretariat in then Limbe.<\/p>\n<p>It then moved to Blantyre before moving to the Arts House at Claim Mabuku Building.<\/p>\n<p>According to Mvona, among the notable achievements, are the 1996 International Literary Festival, almost 30 training workshops, literary competitions, book publications, school visitations and collaboration with international authors and societies through conferences, workshops and writers\u2019 residences.<\/p>\n<p>During the period 2014 to 2016, Mvona was elected Vice Chairman of the International Authors Forum (IAF), a global literary body whose head office is in London.<\/p>\n<p>Mawu currently has 870 members, up by 854 from 16 members in 1995.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Malawi Writers Union (Mawu) will hold its annual general meeting (AGM) on July 8 in Liwonde where top on the agenda will be the election of the new executive.
