People from all walks of life Monday descended upon Agabu Village in Traditional Authority Ganya in Ntcheu to witness the burial of veteran journalist Raphael Tenthani.<\/p>\n
Tenthani died on Saturday in a car accident at Kam\u2019mwamba along the Chingeni-Zalewa stretch of the M1 Road.<\/p>\n
Among those that attended the ceremony are former president Bakili Muluzi and Minister of Information, Tourism and Culture Kondwani Nankhumwa who represented President Peter Mutharika.<\/p>\n
In his message, Nankhumwa described Tenthani as a journalist extraordinaire whose incisive writings provided guidance to political leaders and Malawians in general.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe has left such a huge gap to be filled in the industry. I would like to, therefore, challenge all other journalists to step in his shoes and continue his legacy in the fight for media freedom and democracy in Malawi. This spirit should not be buried with Ralph,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Also speaking at the ceremony, Times Group Managing Director, Leonnard Chikadya, concurred with Nankhumwa, saying Tenthani was an adviser to politicians, civil society and religious leaders.<\/p>\n
Chikadya singled out Tenthani\u2019s unwavering spirit as a professional journalist.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was such a brave journalist that even when he faced arrests and crackdown by authorities because of his journalism, Tenthani never wavered and he kept speaking truth to power in his column in The Sunday Times <\/em>which he authored for 10 years,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Chairperson of Misa Malawi Chapter Thom Khanje said Tenthani\u2019s death was a big loss to the fraternity which he served diligently and professionally for a long time.<\/p>\n Until his death, Tenthani was also correspondent for the BBC, among other international media outlets.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" People from all walks of life Monday descended upon Agabu Village in Traditional Authority Ganya in Ntcheu to witness the burial of veteran journalist Raphael Tenthani.
