Some players in the fight against HIV and Aids have drummed up support to introduce provision of Anti-retroviral Treatment (ART) services in the country\u2019s prisons in order to reach out to prisoners, who are among marginalised groups of the society.<\/p>\n
The call was made in Mangochi when the district in conjunction with National Aids Commission (Nac) held an International Candlelight Memorial Ceremony at Mangochi Prison.<\/p>\n
Mangochi District Aids Coordinating Committee (DACC), Chairperson Christopher Kandionamaso, observed that if Malawi is to achieve the 90-90-90 target in 2020, the issue about minority rights in regard to provision of HIV and Aids related services should be tackled with emphasis.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs a country, we are making progress in other areas of the HIV and Aids fight. But we need to start recognising the need to include marginalised groups in our activities aimed at combating Aids because if we disregard them, all the progress we have made as a country will be in vain,\u201d said Kandionamaso.<\/p>\n
He further urged stakeholders to start encouraging men who have sex with fellow men as well as commercial sex workers and lesbians to seek medical attention without being discriminated against.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have reports that prisoners are being discriminated against whenever they went to hospital to get ARVs. Because of that, there is need to continue opening more ART clinics in prisons across the country just like the way it is in Zomba so that prisoners will be assisted within their location,\u201d said Kandionamaso.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
