{"id":26574,"date":"2016-06-21T09:24:20","date_gmt":"2016-06-21T07:24:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=26574"},"modified":"2016-06-21T09:24:20","modified_gmt":"2016-06-21T07:24:20","slug":"global-health-corps-alumni-support-zomba-central-hospital","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2016\/06\/21\/global-health-corps-alumni-support-zomba-central-hospital\/","title":{"rendered":"Global Health Corps alumni support Zomba Central Hospital"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The nurse in-charge of nursery ward, which houses Kangaroo ward, at the referral Zomba Central Hospital (ZCH) has said the ward needs more material support from the general public.<\/p>\n<p>The in-charge, Indira Chikomoni, said this on Saturday when the ward received support of oxygen cylinders and digital thermometers from members of Global Health Corps Malawi Alumni.<\/p>\n<p>Global Health Corps is a United States-based non-profit organisation that offers a competitive fellowship to support emerging global health leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Chikomoni said the ward, which admits about 400 premature babies a month, does not have enough oxygen concentrators, thermometers and heaters but needs them most to effectively support the babies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do not have enough space in the ward and babies sometimes get cold due to shortage of heaters and in the months between October and January we receive high temperatures in the ward. So, for the thermometers that we have been given will support us in measuring the temperatures while the oxygen cylinders will be helping during power cuts,\u201d Chikomoni said.<\/p>\n<p>President for Global Health Corps Malawi Alumni, Lonjezo Sithole, said the group decided to support Zomba Central Hospital after observing that the referral facility was not receiving much attention from well-wishers if compared to other referral facilities in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter hearing the challenges that the hospital is facing, we brainstormed as members on how best we can assist. We are not a donor organisation but just a group of young people with interest in health equity and we would like to contribute towards improvement of health care as well as health equity. So, within our resource constraints we have only managed to buy oxygen cylinders and digital thermometers. But we understand the ward need more for the babies,\u201d Sithole said.<\/p>\n<p>Global Health Corps selects young professionals for paid, year-long fellowships with organisations promoting health equity in East Africa, Southern Africa, and the United States.<\/p>\n<p>For each Global Health Corps site, one local fellow and one international fellow are selected to promote cross-cultural awareness and understanding and Global Health Corps provides financial support, professional development, and mentorship to hundreds of fellows each year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The nurse in-charge of nursery ward, which houses Kangaroo ward, at the referral Zomba Central Hospital (ZCH) has said the ward needs more material support from the general public.
