We understand the health sector is going through financial challenges but we hope government will look into that. To the graduates my message is simple; nursing is a ministry hence it requires their patience and love,” Nyasulu explained.

USAID is funding the scholarship of nurses and midwives in the Christians nursing colleges and its representative Ruth Madison said maternal health is very essential hence there is more work to be done as the number of nurses and midwives is very small comparing to the growing population.

One of the graduates, Martha Likhomo said she will not look up to government to offer her a job since she has been trained to do some private work as a nurse to make sure that she is not jobless after being graduated.

Currently Malawi has only 12 000 nurses and Midwives to service a population of about 17 million people.

Government says it is training nurses and midwives studying in Christian Health Association of Malawi (Cham) colleges to venture into entrepreneurship as a way of reducing unemployment rate.
