Health Rights and Education Programme (Hrep) has asked the government to increase budget allocation of life-saving commodities in the 2016\/17 national budget.<\/p>\n
In a statement, Hrep Executive Director Maziko Matemba said the government has made a commendable and important step towards honouring its commitment by updating the Malawi Essential Medical List (MEML) but the next important key step is to avail funding of these commodities.<\/p>\n
The MEML is a policy guideline which prescribes and guides the use of medicines in Malawi including the 13 Life Saving Commodities.<\/p>\n
\u201cFurthermore, the budget allocation should be protected expenditure. Spot checks conducted randomly in health facilities reveal a short supply of these commodit ies not commensurate with the high usage in maternal wards. Domestic Budget allocation for Life Saving Commodities will therefore ensure Malawi Government sustainability of their availability.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe, RMNCH Malawi Advocates, remain observant to ensure that the Malawi Government fulfills the commitment it made to the United Nations to start funding these commodities from 2016 onwards. Maternal Health is a proxy indicator for the health of the nation,\u201d Matemba said.<\/p>\n
In September 2015, government reconfirmed its commitment to the United Nations Secretary General Every Woman Every Child Initiatives to avail funding for the 13 Life-Saving commodities for reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health.<\/p>\n
\u201cIncreased funding for the 13 Life-Saving commodities will go a long way in helping to reduce maternal deaths in Malawi which stood at 675\/100,000 (DHS 2010), one of the highest in the world.
