The Malawi Investment and Trade Centre (MITC) says preparations for the China, Malawi investment forum are progressing well and has further confirmed that President Peter Mutharika is expected to officially open the event to be held at the Golden Peacock Hotel in Lilongwe next week.<\/p>\n
At the forum, Malawi is expected to host over 100 Chinese investors from China\u2019s Anhui Province drawn mostly from the agriculture and agro-processing industry and education sectors.<\/p>\n
MITC Chief Executive Officer, Clement Kumbemba, said the forum presents a unique opportunity for Malawi to sell its investment opportunities to potential investors.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are seeking the possibility of transformational Chinese investment in Malawi through this forum. We want to empower Malawian entrepreneurs through possible ventures with Chinese counterparts while intensifying the government and business relations between the two countries,\u201d Kumbemba said.<\/p>\n
MITC has said Malawi and China enjoy cordial business and working relationship. According to statistics from the International Trade Centre, Malawi exported goods and services worth $55,874,000 to China in 2015, which represents 5.2 per cent of Malawi\u2019s exports. In the same year, Malawi imported goods and services worth $303,819,000 from China.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlthough the gap may seem to be wide, China has been making deliberate moves to reduce this gap such as empowering Malawi through various training programmes so that the country is able to develop appropriate concepts and strategies that will propel Malawi\u2019s growth,\u201d reads a statement from MITC.<\/p>\n
According to the statement, China has also been encouraging Chinese companies to invest in Malawi in order to achieve import substitution.
