Police in Ntcheu are reported to have beaten to death Zakaria Malata, aged 49 years, who was in police custody.<\/p>\n
Malata was arrested for allegedly stealing12 bags of maize.<\/p>\n
According to cousin to the deceased, Lawrence Chaziya, Malata was arrested on Wednesday June 8, 2016 by a police investigator identified as a Mr Nyondo and put under custody at Senzani Police Station.<\/p>\n
\u201cOn Thursday morning I followed up on the case at the police station to ask for bail. The police told me that the bail would be granted later in the afternoon as they were still investigating the matter. I went again to check with the police for the bail, only to be advised that Zakariya [Malata] was taken to Ntcheu District Hospital after he got sick,\u201d said Chaziya.<\/p>\n
Chaziya claims that reports at the hospital indicated that he was brought at the hospital by police officers due to drunkenness.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was unconscious then, but before his death he told me and the investigator that he was manhandled by three police officers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
According to Chaziya, the three were identified as Sub-inspector Chimoto, Constable Kachigamba and Constable Tonza.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, spokesperson for Ntcheu Police Station, Gift Matewere said the three officers have been called for interrogations but could not give more information.<\/p>\n
\u201cI cannot safely say it is true or not but those suspected officers from Senzani have been called for interrogations,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Malata\u2019s body was taken to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital yesterday for postmortem.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
