The Rotary Club of Bwaila on Saturday organised a fun run aimed at raising funds for the purchase of equipment for the Paediatric High Dependency Unit at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) and some basic equipment and items at Ntchisi District Hospital\u2019s maternity wing.<\/p>\n
On the day, the Malawi Blood Transfusion Service (MBTS) also collected blood from different donors. There was also a raffle draw with winners going away with a laptop, shopping vouchers and other prizes.<\/p>\n
African Union (AU) Head of Delegation for Southern Africa Regional Office Leopold Ngono, who was guest of honour at the event, underscored the need to help hospitals so that they should optimally assist patients.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is always good to take part in initiatives of this nature because you may need the same materials when you get sick and go to hospital. They are not for any specific person but everyone who may need medical attention,\u201d said Ngono.<\/p>\n
On his part, President of Bwaila Rotary Club Patrick Mhango said the club is committed to assisting different sectors including hospitals.<\/p>\n
He added that the response to the appeal for support was overwhelming as different stakeholders had come in.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are several partners who have helped us and I want to encourage more individuals and corporate organisations to help our hospitals,\u201d said Mhango.<\/p>\n
He added that last year, the club raised money to provide two oxygen concentrators and other equipment for the operation theatres at KCH.<\/p>\n
Mhango said Rotary Club of Bwaila was targeting KCH\u2019s Paediatrics High Dependency Unit because of high mortality rates among children as studies show that one in eight children in Malawi die before their fifth birthday mostly due to common and treatable conditions.<\/p>\n
He added that the maternity wing at Ntchisi District Hospital is also in need of many items including delivery beds and mattresses, oxygen concentrators, overhead heaters for Kangaroo Mother Care room, heavy duty blood pressure machines and many more.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
