Spell Master Educational Communications (Smeco), who are the organisers of the Spelling Bee contest, have sounded an SOS that they are in need of more funds to send three representatives to the African International Spelling Bee in South Africa.<\/p>\n
The international spelling bee competition will be held on July 14.<\/p>\n
Spelling Master Executive Director, Lewis Mbaula, said on Saturday during the junior prize presentation ceremony by sponsors of the junior category A1 Biscuits, a subsidiary of Rab Group of Companies that they need close to K1.3 million to send the three winners to the contest.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need to raise a shortfall of K1.3 million for the three, Kenyan Airways has come in terms of tickets and has paid half on the costs of tickets but there is need for more and so we call upon companies and other well wishers to help us because this is for a national course,\u201d said Mbaula.<\/p>\n
He then thanked all the sponsors who played a bigger role in support the competition which is aimed at among others promoting reading culture.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe had a very wonderful spelling bee season, two champions in the senior category which shows there was stiff competition and then one in the junior section,\u201d said Mbaula.<\/p>\n
He said this was a good page for Malawi to participate at the African contest.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is more to come the next season, registration will start immediately and we are starting in October and now with African spelling contest on the ground there is need to do more and companies need to come in and support,\u201d said Mbaula.<\/p>\n
In the junior category 9-year-old Pasha Kamenya from Kasasa Primary School in Nkhotakota came out top.<\/p>\n
The standard six pupil won a trophy and K1 million courtesy of A1 Biscuits.<\/p>\n
In the senior category, 14-year old Jacqueline Malombe from St Patricks Academy in Blantyre and 14-year old Vanessa Sherry from Baptist Academy, who is the defending champion, came out top.<\/p>\n
The two received K1 million each from Sunbird Hotels.<\/p>\n
Rab Group of Companies Sales and Distribution Manager Douglas Mandala said A1 Biscuits which is a subsidiary of Rab Group of Companies, was happy to be part of the competition.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis year the competition has been successful and it\u2019s even wonderful to see a nine year old girl coming out top in the junior section.<\/p>\n
We want more children to participate and its even motivating because the winner has walked away with K1 million,\u201d said Mandala.<\/p>\n
He said that the competition started on a lower note with Spell master in 2012 but now \u201cwe are scaling it up and so it\u2019s even better in that the winners will participate at the African contest.\u201d<\/p>\n
Junior winner Pasha said she reads a lot to learn new things and called upon fellow students to love books.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am happy and I am motivated. I will use part of the money to pay for my school fees and buy other necessities to assist me in my studies,\u201d said Pasha, who was accompanied by her mother Lucy during the prize presentation ceremony.<\/p>\n
The National Spell Master Spelling Bee started in November last year with over 700 children across the country participating and the grand finale was held in Blantyre on June 4.<\/p>\n
