National Bank of Malawi (NBM) will this Friday present 26 awards to the best performing students from the four constituent colleges of the University of Malawi (Unima) worth K6.5 million.<\/p>\n
NBM Corporate Affairs Manager, Annie Magola, said the awards have been a regular feature on the NBM corporate social responsibility calendar since 1981. This year\u2019s awards will be presented by the bank\u2019s Chief Executive Officer, George Par tridge and Unima\u2019s Vice Chancellor, Professor John Kalenga Saka at the Kamuzu College of Nursing in Lilongwe.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Bank appreciates that university education is a critical component of human development worldwide. It provides not only the high level skills necessary for every labour market but also the training essential for teachers, doctors, nurses, civil servants, engineers and many other personnel.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is these trained individuals who develop capacity and analytical skills that drive local economies, support civil society, lead effective government and make or give input to decisions which affect entire societies,\u201d said Magola.<\/p>\n
She added that NBM puts a lot of emphasis on promoting higher learning and that every year the bank sets aside a budget for awards and prizes to the best students in an effort to encourage students from the various colleges to excel in their various disciplines.<\/p>\n
Magola said apart from promoting higher learning, NBM, through the awards also demonstrates its commitment towards education as spelt out in its corporate social responsibility policy.<\/p>\n
\u201cAwards and prizes are an important instrument for recognition of the high levels of student\u2019s achievements and also help shape the desired high positive behaviour\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n
