Linda Jambo is now a Woman Fide Master, eight other players have been exposed to international chess, and we have advanced our organisation skills,” Nyirenda said.

Nyirenda said Malawi players suffered because of inexperience, but their game was not that far from their opponents.

“Players from countries like Zambia and Angola, travel all over the world to participate in top competitions. It would be unfair to condemn our players. All we need to do is to support them so that they gain exposure,” he said.

Nyirenda also said it would be a bonus if the corporate world sponsored local chess champions to participate in high profile tournaments from neighboring countries like the Botswana Open, Zimbabwe Open among others.

He said constant participation in such tournaments would give Malawi players the needed exposure.

Chessam thanked companies like Crest Ilala Lodge, Airtel Malawi and CDH for helping sponsoring the event.

He also urged the corporate world to assist in developing the mental sport from the grassroots.

“It’s no magic it takes 10 years to build an athlete that can win medals for your country at international events.
