Despite unpleasant results at the last month\u2019s Zone 4.3 Chess Championship, Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) says it will look beyond the sloppy results and take the event as a big lesson.<\/p>\n
Malawi\u2019s team in the open section, struggled in the heat of their Zambia, Zimbabwe, Angola, Botswana, Mozambique and Mauritian opponents.<\/p>\n
Chessam fielded Alfred Chimthere, Misheck Nyirenda, Gerald Mphungu, Wilson Chingati, George Mwale, Richard Chiona, Davie Mawango and Lumbani Banda.<\/p>\n
It was only in the ladies category that Linda Jambo brought something to celebrate about.<\/p>\n
Jambo earned the Woman Fide Master title after finishing fourth.<\/p>\n
Another result worth mentioning could be Fide Master Gerald Mphungu\u2019s draw with Zambian celebrated International Master, Daniel Jere.<\/p>\n
Chessam publicist, Makhosi Nyirenda, said they learnt a lot from the event, and the association was pleased that eight other players were exposed to international chess.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe results may have been poor, but let\u2019s look at the positive side of the whole thing. Linda Jambo is now a Woman Fide Master, eight other players have been exposed to international chess, and we have advanced our organisation skills,\u201d Nyirenda said.<\/p>\n
Nyirenda said Malawi players suffered because of inexperience, but their game was not that far from their opponents.<\/p>\n
\u201cPlayers from countries like Zambia and Angola, travel all over the world to participate in top competitions. It would be unfair to condemn our players. All we need to do is to support them so that they gain exposure,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Nyirenda also said it would be a bonus if the corporate world sponsored local chess champions to participate in high profile tournaments from neighboring countries like the Botswana Open, Zimbabwe Open among others.<\/p>\n
He said constant participation in such tournaments would give Malawi players the needed exposure.<\/p>\n
Chessam thanked companies like Crest Ilala Lodge, Airtel Malawi and CDH for helping sponsoring the event.<\/p>\n
He also urged the corporate world to assist in developing the mental sport from the grassroots.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s no magic it takes 10 years to build an athlete that can win medals for your country at international events. If we can start investing in primary Schools and Secondary Schools now, we will have a strong team in future,\u201d Nyirenda said.<\/p>\n
The Chessam GS cited young players like Anne Simwawa, Tupokiwe Msukwa as very promising.<\/p>\n
Chessam also thanked the committee of Susan Namangale, Mayeso Mphande, Mark Chikoko, Steve Mpighu, Gershom Chima, Terence Namaona, Zengani Mkandawire, Magret Ngugama, Gershom Chima, Wasoka Chirwa, Peter Jailosi for organizing the high profile event.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
