{"id":25368,"date":"2016-05-31T12:20:12","date_gmt":"2016-05-31T10:20:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=25368"},"modified":"2016-05-31T12:20:12","modified_gmt":"2016-05-31T10:20:12","slug":"bombshell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2016\/05\/31\/bombshell\/","title":{"rendered":"Bombshell"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sports associations in the country should brace for tougher times as the Malawi National Council of Sports has revealed that it would reduce its annual subventions to the associations.<\/p>\n<p>In an exclusive interview Monday, the council\u2019s Executive Secretary, George Jana, revealed that this year\u2019s allocation to sports from the 2015-2016 National Budget is K1.05 billion, which is a major drop from last year\u2019s K1.230 billion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDefinitely, there have to be some changes in funding. We are working out on the best modalities to carry it out, but if funding decreases it is obvious that we have to cut the allocations to the associations,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have to seriously market their associations and find ways to carry out their programmes. They should find sponsors from elsewhere to make sure they are still active.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jana added that the council was working on the budget to roll out Physical Education subject in schools, as part of government\u2019s reforms in sports.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, most associations have recently complained about the inadequacy of funds to run their programmes.<\/p>\n<p>Football Association of Malawi (Fam) is among the associations that have complained about inadequate funding to carry out several activities, especially national team assignments, as it gets K100 million annually.<\/p>\n<p>Fam President, Walter Nyamilandu, said the reduction in the funding would have an adverse impact on Malawi football.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would be counter-productive and a recipe for disaster because we are seriously under-funded. It is a threat to the growth and development of sports in general. Malawi will continue to lag behind on the global scale because we won\u2019t be able to make significant investment to develop talent and achieve the required competitive advantage that can set us apart,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) gets K101 million and is second to Fam on the list of the most-funded associations.
