Southern Region Chess League has identified a squad to represent the region at the national finals set for next weekend.<\/p>\n
The region organised a qualifying tournament at Central High School in Blantyre on Saturday where 18 youngsters from several age brackets were selected.<\/p>\n
In the Under-8 boys\u2019 category, Zonse Chibisa of Saint Andrews Primary and Zane Sheriff from Southend Primary were identified.<\/p>\n
Yewo Sanga of Saint Columbas and Blantyre Baptist\u2019s Zaitwa Mwale also qualified into the Under-10 boys\u2019 section.<\/p>\n
Khwima Gondwe of Chichiri Primary and Emmanuel Phiri of Saint Columbas also made it into the Under-12 boys section.<\/p>\n
Other boys that qualified included Tafadzwa Linje, Happiness Masuku (Under-14), William Sekani and Alaric Katuma (Under-18).<\/p>\n
In the girls\u2019 section: Daisy Huwa (Alipo Private), Nagawa Gwala (JBF)-Under-10, Mirabelle Chafumuka (Royal Heritage), Michelle Chimbe (Southend Primary) Under-12 and Esther Mazalo (JBF) Under-14.<\/p>\n
The region\u2019s Chess- In-Schools\u2019 Coordinator, Margaret Ngugama, said they were excited with the selected players.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe participation was affected by a number of factors, including examinations. However, all age-groups had an excellent turn up. The standard of play was also exciting,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Ngugama said they would train the team ahead of the national finals set for Lilongwe.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was a busy day at Central High. Southern Region has undoubtedly built up a strongest chess base through the youths. Statistics reveal that from the 14 prizes awarded at the Presidential Initiative for Sports in the juniors\u2019 category, eight were from the South.
