Bengol Tele-Construction, a wholly owned Malawian firm, has applied for an Internet Service Provider licence from the Malawi Communications and Regulatory Authority (Macra) seeking to deliver high speed internet services using Fiber to Home internet technology.<\/p>\n
An application letter addressed to Macra, which we have seen, shows that Bengol is planning to pump K2 billion in the first phase of the roll-out process which is expected to connect 160, 000 internet users by 2017.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe hereby apply for a license for Internet Service Provider. We want to provide high speed internet services in Malawi particularly from fiber to home and fiber to office. This technology is quite popular world over because of its lucrative feature and benefits. Unfortunately, back at home fiber optic internet service is not available,\u201d reads the application letter from Bengol company addressed to Macra dated February 26, 2016 and signed by the company\u2019s Managing Director, Mohammad Zafar Abdullah.<\/p>\n
When contacted, Abdullah said the technology provides fast internet to users because it goes direct from fiber to the users. He said the company is now awaiting approval from government.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe already have the money. We are ready to roll out. This technology will lessen internet challenges in the country,\u201d said Abdullah.<\/p>\n
Principal Secretary for Information, Communication, Technology and Civic Education, Justin Saidi, confirmed seeing the application and said a decision on the matter would be made soon.<\/p>\n
