Authorities championing interventions on climate change adaptations through the Climate Proofing Project have urged people to embrace the concept as one way of scaling up the initiative, which intends to people to adapt to changes in the environment.<\/p>\n
Government, with funding from global environment facility, is implementing a five-year climate proofing project worth $5.4 million which was channeled through United Nations Development Fund (UNDP). The project is currently being piloted in Mangochi and Machinga districts.<\/p>\n
And on Saturday, the project\u2019s officials in Mangochi held a field day at Traditional Authority Nankumba under the theme: \u201cClimate Proofing Interventions Key to Sustainable Integrated Livehoods despite Climate Changes.<\/p>\n
Speaking in an interview, Mangochi District Agriculture spokesperson, Fredrick Makiyi, encouraged locals to embrace ideas which are being advanced through the project as that will help them adapt to the emerging changes in the environment.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is difficult to work with groups where individuals are not sharing the same goals. But we are happy that people in the areas where we have visited so far are showing interest because most of them are in agreement that there is need to change some of the habits in order to adapt to effects of climate change,\u201d said Makiyi.<\/p>\n
In his remarks, village headman Nkupa called for behavior change among his subjects, which he said is crucial in ensuring that locals are able to overcome challenges associated with climate change.<\/p>\n
Nkupa blamed the habit by some local people who are fond of waiting for handouts from government and other sectors despite the fact that they are living in areas where there is enough water and land for irrigation farming.<\/p>\n
\u201cI would also like to appeal to government to provide motorised pumps to some farmers who have already engaged in winter cropping as a way of empowering them,\u201d said Nkupa.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
