Mulanje agriculture development officer, Enford Kanyimbo, has said more than 20,000 households are expected to face hunger in the district.<\/p>\n
Kanyimbo said the district has 185,251 farming households but out of these, 20,000 will be affected by hunger representing 10.7 percent, which is higher than last year\u2019s seven percent.<\/p>\n
He discouraged people from relying on maize only, urging them to diversify by planting drought resistant crops such as cassava and potatoes.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need to change our mindset, some people feel like when they do not eat nsima, they have not eaten,\u201d Kanyimbo said.<\/p>\n
Speaking when he donated variety of maize seeds to Tipindule Irrigation Scheme, Mosanto\u2019s sales and marketing officer Dennis Kachikho said the seeds will help farmers to be self reliant other than waiting for food handouts.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have brought this kind of seeds after your Member of Parliament approached us to support your irrigation initiative. We did not hesitate but to donate a little something,\u201d said Kachikho.<\/p>\n
According to Kachikho, the seeds will be distributed to 115 beneficiaries.<\/p>\n
Member of Parliament for Mulanje Pasani, Angie Kaliati, said when he visited the scheme, he noticed that many farmers needed seeds and was grateful that Mosanto came to their rescue.<\/p>\n
