Malawi Police Service (MPS) has taken a bold step in emphasising professionalism among its officers amid reports of misconduct by some law enforcers.<\/p>\n
As one way of bringing sanity in its operations, MPS has launched a supplementary booklet of code of ethics which will act as a guide in their daily business.<\/p>\n
Speaking during the launch in Lilongwe on Thursday, Inspector General (IG) of Police, Lexten Kachama, admitted the rise of incidents of police misconduct that have eroded trust in the public domain.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou will agree with me that the Malawi Police Service has been accused of corruption, abusing legal powers and all sorts of misconducts which have dented our image with the public losing trust and confidence in us.<\/p>\n
\u201cIncrease in cases of mob justice and attacks on police officers have also contributed to the decline of public confidence in the police,\u201d Kachama said.<\/p>\n
He said the seven-point booklet, which has been produced under the Malawi Policing Improvement Programme with support from the United Kingdom, seeks to reduce misconduct of officers and raise awareness to all Malawians regarding the acceptable behaviour of police officers.<\/p>\n
The IG further said despite resource constraints rocking the police service, officers are expected to be honest, accountable, professional and impartial at the same time holding integrity in the line of duty.<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery police officer will have to carry in their pockets a copy of this code of conduct as part of their uniform. We want to bring a change among us and this will serve as a reminder to what the public expects from us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He then asked all officers to abide by the code of conduct or to resign.<\/p>\n
