If we are getting only half a portion, everyone should get half a portion not that selected few should be getting a 10 times portion,” he said.

In a mostly impromptu speech and sideline interview, Mtumbuka, who is the newly appointed Mejn Board Chairperson, said trends in the country provide clear indicators of the relationship between the prevailing socio-economic hardships and policy decisions, and the pursuit of narrow interests by leaders over the last 20 years or so.

He said the fact that majority of Malawians are still wallowing in deep poverty should pose questions to the country’s economists, adding “perhaps our economists are merely better among the poor and ignorant but cannot compete favourably on the international scene.

They are just like a one-eyed person among the blind”.

The bishop challenged economists to peddle ideologies that will narrow the gap between the haves and have-nots in the country and do away with the existing survival-of – the- fittest economic system that paves way for the privileged tough to get going while the weak are falling off.

In her remarks, Mataya said Mejn has contributed to raise awareness around economic justice in the country, citing the alertness on economic governance of the national budget which helps people understand whether the financial plan is appropriate for the country at the time.

“As I go out, what I would really want to see is for Mejn to work hand in hand with most government arms because we are standing for the rural masses yet there are times when government would not take us seriously,” she said.

Catholic Bishop Martin Mtumbuka of Karonga Diocese has asked economists and other finance and economic-related institutions to stop subjecting the country to untried and unproductive rhetoric that does not heal society of the economic malaise.
