{"id":24111,"date":"2016-05-11T12:02:33","date_gmt":"2016-05-11T10:02:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=24111"},"modified":"2016-05-11T12:02:33","modified_gmt":"2016-05-11T10:02:33","slug":"judge-hears-cashgate-case-in-incomplete-building","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2016\/05\/11\/judge-hears-cashgate-case-in-incomplete-building\/","title":{"rendered":"Judge hears cashgate case in incomplete building"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>High Court Judge Fiona Mwale Tuesday heard a Cashgate case in a building currently under construction in Lilongwe.<\/p>\n<p>Mwale decided to hear arguments for sentencing of Cashgate convict Caroline Savala in a building being constructed adjacent to the High Court building.<\/p>\n<p>Savala, who last year was convicted of charges of looting public money amounting to K84 million in 2013, is awaiting sentencing.<\/p>\n<p>The issue of service of documents led to the adjournment of the matter to May 16, 2016. The matter may however be shifted to another date since Monday is a public holiday.<\/p>\n<p>Judiciary spokesperson Mlenga Mvula, said completion of the structure is expected to ease the problem of courtrooms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurrently we do not have enough court rooms. One of the court rooms [in the new building in Lilongwe] will be for the Chief Resident Magistrate. There will also be court rooms for the High Court,\u201d Mvula said.<\/p>\n<p>With the ongoing cashgate cases, there has been a big demand for court rooms in Lilongwe. Apart, from that, the size of some court rooms has caused some problems in cases where many suspects are involved.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, it was proposed that the matter in which about 18 suspects are answering Cashgate charges should be moved to a spacious room.<\/p>\n<p>There is also a case involving 13 suspects, which, in most cases, the court room is always filled to capacity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>High Court Judge Fiona Mwale Tuesday heard a Cashgate case in a building currently under construction in Lilongwe.
